This shows the typical deep red color of Balgownie Shiraz, with vibrant berry fruit aromas and subtle use of oak. The palate shows rich blackberry, licorice and splashes of red fruit enlivened with hints of spice; fine tannins, long finish. The wine is medium-bodied, concentrated, yet elegant with a velvety texture and fine lingering tannins. While approachable in its youth, it can be cellared over the medium to long term.

95 pts - Australian Wine Annual: “Steeped in an exotic, musky perfume of black pepper, five spice, violets and briar, with bright aromas of cassis and blackberries knit with creamy, lightly toasty vanilla oak. It’s underpinned by a firm, drying astringency and opens up layers of deep, dark fruit and charcuterielike
complexity that extend long down the palate towards a finish of length, strength and balance.”
91+ pts - The Wine Advocate: “Very deep garnet-purple in color, the 2009 Shiraz is profoundly scented of black currant, blackberry preserves and blueberry compote with an undercurrent of coffee, licorice, smoked bacon, fertile loam and tar. Medium to full-bodied, it has a firm level of chewy tannins and
well balanced, refreshing acid cutting through the generous black berry and savory flavor layers, finishing long. Consider drinking it 2013 to 2020+.”
90 pts - International Wine Cellar: “Glass-staining ruby. Lively aromas of dark berries, minerals, potpourri and spicecake. Supple and spicy on the palate, with notable intensity to its black raspberry and violet pastille flavors. Finishes sappy, floral and long, leaving spice and dark fruit notes behind.”
89 pts - Wine Spectator: “Ripe and supple, with an earthy edge to the plum and tobacco flavors, lingering easily on the finish.”
