97 pts - Australian Wine Companion: “The inaugural release, open-fermented and matured in French hogsheads (25% new) for 12 months. It’s a fool’s errand to nominate a drink-to date for this wine! Mataro is a notable age-worthy variety, and one made from low yielding 100+yo vines by a red wine master maker who held responsibility for making Grange for many years. The color is beautiful, a deep, vibrant crimson, the bouquet complex and rich, the palate with layer upon layer of mainly black fruits that keep their feet on the throat of any tannins trying to make center stage.”
93 pts - Robert Parker Wine Advocate: “Duval’s first release of a straight Mataro, this is sourced from 115-year-old dry-grown vines in Light Pass. The 2016 Annexus Mataro is a jaw-dropper, packed with mulberry and black cherry fruit. It’s garnished with hints of oaky spice and vanilla from aging in 20% new French oak puncheons, but the compelling fruit stays front and center. Full-bodied, concentrated and rich, it ends with a flourish of velvety tannins.”
93 pts - JamesSuckling.com: “A brambly nose of blackberry leaves, undergrowth, forest berries, dried herbs and ivy with some citrus. The palate shows some good structured tannins, some pretty fresh acidity and a taut finish.”
